Computer Consulting: A Business of Time and Sweat Equity

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

By Joshua Feinberg Building a computer consulting business requires a lot of time. It involves going out to meetings and it’s shaking a lot of hands. You’ll need to make a lot of follow-up phone calls. Display ads and direct mail drops and similar marketing efforts do not replace calling up a potential client to try to establish a person-to-person connection. Because of the required hands-on time, you should be realistic about what it takes to get your computer consulting business going. Franchises Don’t Serve Silver Platters Even with a franchise operation, the franchiser is not handing you a client list on a silver platter. If you want to be handed a client list on one, don’t buy a franchise: you need to buy a current business. And of course, buying a current business is even more capital intensive than a franchise. To buy even a small, thriving IT consulting firm could cost anywhere from a few hundred thousand dollars to a few million dollars pretty much some multiple of its annual sales. What Are Your Computer Consulting Business Start-Up Costs? On the other hand, you can start your own consulting firm generally for as little as a few thousand dollars. What do you need? You need a business phone number and voice mail. You need a cell phone. You need business cards and legal licensing registrations. And you probably want to meet with an attorney and an accountant. You’ll need some insurance. In many cases you can get started working out of your home office. Start-up costs are certainly higher with a franchise. Franchises Aren’t for Control Freaks Another downside of franchise can be a loss of control. You have to do things a certain way and according to the established rules. And you can’t step too far outside of that. Again, your company would be paying the franchiser a percentage of your company’s revenue indefinitely. And you won’t have as much flexibility in taking your business in a lot of different directions that you may want to. The Bottom Line on Computer Consulting Computer consulting has a few different options for start-up. You can start an independent business, buy a franchise or buy an established business, depending if you want to start from scratch or be handed a client list. A start-from-scratch computer consulting business requires more sweat equity than money. Copyright Notice: Copyright MMI-MMVI, PC Support Tips .com. Improve Your Sales Letters Instantly with These 4 Simple Steps!

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Caroline Melberg Frequently clients will ask me, How can you write effective sales letters so FAST? One of my clients even shared with me how much time he was spending, hunched over his keyboard, trying to create the perfect winning sales letter. A long time ago, my personal mentor and good trusted friend told me a secret that I have used ever since to write sales letters and any other type of business (or personal) letter. I shared this tip with my client and he’s spending much less time agonizing over his sales letters now. The secret is a little copywriting trick known by the acronym: AIDA. No, I’m not talking about some Italian opera - AIDA stands for: Attention, Interest, Desire and Action, the 4 components every good letter must have. Here’s how it works: Attention Think about the person you are writing to. What will benefit THEM? Why should they care about what you have to say? If you keep your writing focused on how what you have to say will benefit them, you’ll capture their attention and compel them to keep reading. Interest Once you’ve captured their attention with your benefits, it’s time to back those benefits up and hold your reader’s interest with a few facts. Keep it short and sweet, but give ‘em the facts - this stuff just isn’t that interesting and won’t keep your reader riveted to your letter for long. If you told your reader at the start of your letter that your product would help him lose 30 lbs. by next week - you better be ready to back that up with some facts about the ingredients in your product that will do just that. (And if you DO have a product guaranteed to cause that kind of weight loss, call me!) Desire Now that your reader is interested in what you have to say, you need to help them understand why they should buy from you most people buy on emotion, and then look for logical reasons to back up their decision. Don’t make them have to work too hard to rationalize their decision! Tell them about the advantages of buying from you, provide an iron-clad guarantee, offer a great deal and back it all up with testimonials from satisfied customers. (If we were fishing, this is where I’d tell you to set the hook!) Action Here’s where you reel ‘em in! Make sure you close with a strong call-to-action that gets them to click the order now button or pick up the phone immediately. Something like: HURRY! Limited Time Offer - Act Now - Don’t Miss Out! Call Now to Place Your Order or visit us as www.lose30lbsnow.com (hey, if you DO have that product, that domain is available - I just checked as I made it up).. Make sure you provide order details or instructions on what you want the reader to do - what kind of action should they take? Call for more information? Place an order immediately? State it very clearly and make it super-easy to do and you will be surprised at how successful this simple little formula will make your next sales letter writing project! Fight Fat By Drinking Water

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By Jude C Wright For years, doctors have been advising us to drink eight eight-ounce glasses of water every day. Our environment sucks water from us daily. Homes and offices have radiant or forced-air heating in the winter and low-humidity air conditioning in the summer. All the time we’re sitting and working in these rooms, we usually drink less water than we lose. It takes very little fluid loss - only 1 to 2 percent of our body’s total water content - to cause dehydration. Each day we lose at least two cups of water through just breathing. Two more cups of water are lost through perspiration and sic more cups through urination and elimination processes. That’s ten cups a day! There are other things that contribute to water loss. Drinking coffee and other beverages that contain caffeine can contribute since these beverages act as diuretics. Additional moisture evaporates as we sweat when exercising or doing housework. We do take in some liquid in our food; sometimes quite a substantial amount. You will usually get about 3 1/2 cups of fluid from what you eat during the day. Your body also generates about 1/2 a cup of fluid as part of your metabolic processes. Since we lose ten cups of water a day and only get four cups from food and metabolism, it is obvious that we need to drink at least six cups per day just to equal it out. You’re better off if you can drink the recommended eight glasses of water. All of the liquid that you drink doesn’t have to be in the form of water. You can drink skim milk, unsweetened juices or other non-caffeinated beverages. Heat, exercise and diet can all make a difference as to how much liquid your body actually needs. You’ll need to take in more fluids if you eat potato chips for a snack rather than an orange. Getting your full quota of liquids does more than conserve the energy your body uses. It also burns fat. Added benefits are the increased ability for your body to fight tension and fatigue. Sometimes we think we are hungry when we are really thirsty. That’s when we are more likely to eat high-fat snacks. A good way to tell whether you are hungry or thirsty is to drink a glass of ice-cold water when you feel hungry. Wait a few minutes to see if your “hunger pangs” have been satisfied. Drinking water has been shown to eliminate food cravings and reduce appetite. When you drink plenty of liquids throughout the day, it takes up space in your stomach, helps you feel full and reduces your desire to eat. Some studies indicate that increased water intake may help reduce fat deposits by flushing them out of your system. It may also help to drink colder beverages rather than hot because your body needs more heat energy to warm it to body temperature. Your body needs water for more than just burning fat. It also flushes other impurities from your body and keeps your brain hydrated for better concentration. You can tell if your body is dehydrated. Take a breath in through your nose and see if you feel a slight tightness of your nasal passages. If you do, grab that water bottle and take in some water. Add some lemon juice, orange juice or peppermint flavoring to give yourself some variety. Using sweeteners and sugar may stimulate your appetite rather than depressing it. And drinking colas with caffeine and sugar can really hurt your diet. Your body needs water so give it all it needs - and more. Hydrate your body to burn excess fat and you’ll be on your way to weight loss success. Jude Wright is the owner of “9 Weeks to Weight Loss” at 9WeekstoWeightLoss.com. Counting Calories is Not All There is to Losing Weight

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Eunice Coughlin Losing weight is not just about calories in, calories out. Many personal trainers say that all you have to do is control the amount of calories going in versus amount of calories going out and you will lose weight. Unfortunately, thats not always the way it works. Our bodies are not machines or computers; our bodies are living organisms with cells, tissues, organs and chemicls that sometimes dont work the way they should. Your body’s malfunctions can sometimes result in weight gain. Finding out the cause of why you cant lose weight in spite of the calories in/calories out equation is important to living a healthy life. Examples of conditions that cause you to gain weight includehypothyroidperimenopausetoo much estrogenmetabolism adaptationsemotional eatingstressdepression Many of these problems are related to each other, such that one condition causes the other condition to kick in. For instance, when you have a hypothyroid, the hormones released by the thyroid to make your metabolism function properly are not released. It sets off a chain reaction in your body that makes it impossible to lose weight, no matter how many calories go in or go out. Another example is when you are experiencing perimenopause, your body makes too much estrogen. This causes you to gain weight which makes your body produce more estrogen and the cycle continues resulting in weight gain and no weight loss. Sometimes when you restrict your calorie intake too much, your bodys metabolism adapts to this decrease in energy and lowers your metabolism. Your body can survive on less calories and won’t go into your fat stores for energy needs because it doesn’t need to. As a result, your diet is causing you to not lose weight. Emotional eating occurs when we allow our emotions to control our behavior. It doesnt matter if you know that a particular food is bad for you, you consume it anyway, just like an alcoholic turns to liquor to deal with difficult emotions. Too much stress can cause a physiological reaction that results in weight gain even though you are following the guidelines of a healthy diet. Stress can cause you to gain weight if you do not process your bodys fight or flight response in the right way. Depression can cause you to turn to sugar for for an increase in energy and to lift your mood. Sugar causes an increase in serotonin which makes you feel good. But then it is quickly burned off and you need more, just like a drug addict needs more drugs to stay high and feel good. So what can you do? If you are having problems losing weight,Examine your habits and see if you are not eating the right things and exercising regularly. Keep a food and activity journal to see patterns in your daily living that might be sabotaging weight loss. If the calories in/calories out equation is coming out wrong, thenInvestigate your overall health. The internet can be very helpful as long as you are careful to use credible sources of information.See your doctor and have lab work done that includes a TSH test (shows thyroid function).Look at how you handle your emotions. Do you eat when you are not hungry? Get to the bottom of those feelings that cause you to eat.Are you under a lot of stress? Do you deal with it in a healthy way? Find out how your body can improve the way it reacts to stress. If you are depressed, find out the reasons why and look for other mood-lifters besides sugar. If its really bad, your body may not be manufacturing enough serotonin. There are resources and supplements available to help you overcome this problem. For most people, losing weight is all about calories in/calories out. But if that equation is not working for you, care enough about your health to find out the reason why your body is not operating the way it should. Patio Furniture That Will Turn Your Backyard Into Your Outdoor Retreat

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Gordon Kaye When shopping for most things, people usually base their decision, at least in part, on looks. Patio furniture is no different. But there are many other things to consider. Asking yourself the following questions will help ensure that you make the best decision. First, how much room do you have? If you have a sprawling yard, with a garden and a large patio, you can comfortably fit a larger table and chairs on your patio. You might also think about adding a chaise or other furniture, space permitting. If you have the room, why not fill it with attractive furnishings? On the other hand, if you have a small area, such as a tiny patio or a balcony, you can still make it into your own personal outdoor oasis, just by using fewer pieces. Second, what is the purpose of your patio furniture? Do you plan on using it regularly? Will you just use it for special occasions? Will you entertain large groups? Will you use it for smaller gatherings? This might help you decide between a large, utilitarian teak patio set and a smaller, more intimate glass-topped table and chairs. Third, what styles do you like? Do you like the clean lines of teak? Are you a fan of the elegance of wrought iron? Do you like the sleek look of aluminum? Do you prefer cushions over fabric? Within each of these categories, you can find a wide array of styles, colors and features that fit your lifestyle. Each of these materials comes with its own set of considerations as well, such as maintenance, storage and durability. These are just three factors to think about when purchasing patio furniture. Of course, there are other things to mull over, such as your budgeted allowance and upkeep of the patio set, but by consulting this list, you will be well on your way to making the best possible choice of patio furniture. Gordon Kaye invites you to enjoy quality patio furniture that will transform your backyard into an outdoor oasis. http://www.myperfectpatio.com offers all the patio accessories and outdoor furniture to help you transform your backyard. Phentramin Reviewed

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

By Cameron Pascoal There has been a lot of press and media attention targeted at the recent myriad of “Hoodia” diet supplements. The initial consumer response has been quite receptive, and surprisingly enough many of the media outlets (including popular investigative shows such as 60 Minutes) have actually greeted these new diet supplements with a warm response. After a lot of deliberation (and a quick 5 minute consultation with my girlfriend), I decided that I would try one of the more popular products (Phentramin) and see how it goes. Now Phentramin does not claim to be a wonder pill, and it says that I will only see really significant results if I take it as directed as well as exercise and stay active. That struck me as a bit odd, but I’ve decided to simply stick to my current routine (eating relatively healthy with light cardio every now and then) and add Phentramin to it. Any results will be due to Phentramin, and not me working out. One Week So after consuming 14 pills (2 per day; one in the morning, and one in the early afternoon) I am somewhat dismayed to notice only a slight change in weight with a total loss only adding up to 3 pounds. Since this is my first time taking any kind of supplement I was hoping for a more dramatic change in my weight, though I suppose that losing 12 pounds every month for essentially doing nothing different is an acceptable outcome. One thing I have noticed is that my mouth was excessively dry for the first few days that I took it, but after simply drinking more water (around 12 glasses a day) I’ve yet to experience it again. If anything, I’ll lose a bit of weight and I’ll be well hydrated. Two Weeks I’ve now taken 28 pills and my results are not that much different than they were at the end of last week- I’ve lost a total of 5 pounds, and only 2 pounds during this last week. I’d be a bit more upset, but my eating habits have not consciously changed (though I will admit that I am eating less), and the weight that I’ve lost has yet to re-appear. I can’t quite squeeze into a few pairs of jeans I wore a couple of years ago, but I figure that it’s not too far off. As well, I have not had any side effects to speak of this week. No dry mouth, no irritability, no nothing. That I do like. Three Weeks Now at 42 pills and still going strong. Something interesting happened mid-week, though: I noticed that I was really jumpy, and that feeling kept going on, and on, and on… you get the point. I was like the energizer bunny, but probably twice as annoying. Oh, and I’m happy to say that I’ve lose 12 pounds, and 7 of them came during this last week. Perhaps it was a result of a case of mild hyperactivity, but I’ll take it. I’m almost a full two sizes smaller around my waistline, and I’m still eating and drinking whenever I feel like it. Month End So I’ve taken the entire bottle (60 pills) and I have mixed emotions. On one hand, I’m glad and somewhat relieved that I no longer have to take diet pills and I can say that I am not taking any supplements for my weight loss. On the other hand, however, I’m disappointed- I really enjoyed the increased energy and enthusiasm I had during the last couple of weeks. But I’m sure none of you reading this will care about that. What’s the number, you ask? Well, last week I said I had lost 12 pounds in total. Take a guess at what I lost during my fourth and final week. If you guessed 6 pounds, for a total of 18 pounds lost, you were absolutely incorrect. I lost a total of 20 pounds (8 during the last week) over the course of the month literally making no effort to do anything different other than take Phentramin. I did eat less, but not because I wanted to, but because I wasn’t hungry as often. Did I enjoy Phentramin? You betcha, and I’m not ashamed to recommend it to others! But please, take my review with a grain of salt and check out customer-submitted diet pill reviews to help you save money and find a diet pill that actually works. Funnel Your Way to Marketing Success

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

By Michael Daehn A funnel is a good way to think of the marketing process. The top is very broad and consists of using mass marketing techniques. Mass marketing includes items like mass mailings, national advertising, billboards, and airing commercials during the Super Bowl. The marketing message is sent to a broad audience with little or no discretion. Mass marketing is very expensive, difficult to evaluate, and has a low return on investment. Mass marketing is a stab in the dark, like trying to find needles in a haystack. The next section of the funnel narrows the target audience into market segments. The communications still appeal to a large audience, but they are at least targeted to a specific market segment by means of the chosen media. Cat Fancy magazine, ESPN, and the Oxygen website each target a specific segment of the market: cat lovers, sports enthusiasts, and women, respectively. Next, we narrow the target audience further into niche or specialty markets. Harley Davidson, Barbie, and Macintosh computers each appeal to a specialty area of the market. The bottom of the funnel is the customized or one-to-one area of the funnel. The consumer being on a first-name basis with the product or service provider often characterizes these markets. Mike the mechanic, Bill the barber, Doc Baker are all one-to-one relationships in which the customer and service provider know each other personally. Through the use of technology and mass customization, these relationships can be available on a wide scale such as in the case of the My Yahoo! page. ROI ROI stands for return on investment. Every one of the techniques in the funnel will gain customers. The question is which technique will provide the greatest return on investment. A Super Bowl ad is sure to create interest and generate new customers, but at what price? The same amount of money spent at the bottom and targeted directly at ideal customers will produce a much greater return on investment. Two benefits of targeting the bottom of the funnel are the likelihood of a positive response and the kinds of relationships that are established. Relationships on the bottom of the funnel are more committed and not easily broken. One-to-one customers form the bedrock, the foundation, for any successful product line. These people are not likely to change to a competitor due to the mutual commitment they feel between themselves and the brand. Customers at the bottom of the funnel can and should become your best marketing tool. They are positive multipliers that spread the word to friends and family. There are three levels of the one-to-one section: the customer, the referent, and the advocate. The customer will continue to buy the product and not switch to the competition. The referent will continue to buy the product and will tell others about the product when asked (give referrals). The advocate will continue to purchase the product, will actively promote the product, and will convince others to buy it. The goal of every marketer is to gain advocates for the product. To summarize, the top of the funnel is the most expensive with the least return on investment and the least amount of consumer loyalty, while the bottom of the funnel is the least expensive with the greatest return on investment and the greatest amount of consumer loyalty. Getting consumers to the bottom is the goal. Marketers should always be guiding their consumers to the bottom of the funnel where the costs are less and the relationships are stronger. Take it from the Top Why would anyone market to a mass audience at the top of the funnel? There are three reasons marketers come in from the top of the funnel: lack of education, sloth, and lack of opportunity. The majority of people marketing products do not know anything about the marketing funnel. If you know anyone that needs to be a more effective marketer, I urge you to advocate this book to him or her. Millions of dollars are spent because that is just the way things have been done in the past, or that is what companies see from their competitors. If you want to lead the market, then innovate instead of imitating. On the other hand, some people are too lazy to work on building these types of relationships with customers. Often it is easier to pay for a television commercial or a billboard than to figure out how to establish one-to-one relationships with thousands of target customers. The final reason is lack of opportunity. Sometimes when marketing a new product, it is necessary to enter the market from higher up in the funnel. If this is the case, steer your customer relationships down the funnel as quickly as possible. For example, if you must enter the market by means of a national newspaper advertisement, link the ad to a customizable website or some other tool that allows the relationship to develop further and reduces the need for future mass marketing efforts. Wedding Reception Music - Hitting The Right Note

Monday, September 17th, 2007

By Carole Anderson Thinking about your wedding reception music? A good choice of musical entertainment for your guests is one way to make your reception go with a swing! Let’s face it — there are just so many aspects to planning a wedding that all too often choices of entertainment for the reception come way down the list. But if you’re going to hire special equipment or book a band or a DJ, it’s worth thinking about what you need well in advance to avoid disappointment. So what choices are available to serenade the bride and groom along with their friends and families? A live band for the after-ceremony part of the day has always been a popular choice. Whether it’s an afternoon reception or an evening party, live musicians add a touch of classy magic to almost any event. It’s not the cheapest option, however, and it’s important to choose a group that you know will deliver the type of music that appeals to you. That’s one reason why it’s a good idea to hear the players perform before you decide to hire them — or at the very least, get some references from others whose opinions you trust. On the other hand, if the bride and groom have a favorite selection of songs or tunes that are special to them, they might prefer to avail themselves of the services of a DJ for their wedding. A professional DJ is likely to be able to meet a wide range of musical requests and may not be as expensive to hire as a band of players. But every DJ has their individual style, so this is another instance in which it’s advisable to sample their services or get feedback from others who have previously employed them. For many couples, however, the costs of hiring a band or DJ may prove prohibitive. Fortunately, budget-conscious wedding planners nowadays have the option of borrowing or renting a PA system which they can use to play their own song selections from a music system or portable player. This is also a versatile choice, as it can also provide amplification for wedding speeches from the father of the bride, the groom, the best man or other members of the wedding party, should it be needed. This do-it-yourself option is an economical way to allow couples freedom of choice in their wedding dance music. But if there’s a music system to be operated, it’s important that they have help from friends or family and that a trustworthy person be put in charge of the task. The bride and groom will likely be busy enough with their guests! Music is an important element in setting the mood and tone of any celebration. Whatever the theme that’s chosen, there are likely to be songs or tunes that are special to the couple getting married and which help create the right atmosphere.
